Lobelia chamaepitys var. chamaepitys is a tufted shrublet growing woody stems branching from the base. The simple, narrowly oblong leaves have sunken midribs and unevenly toothed margins. The flowers grow mostly solitary on erect, naked pedicels that are usually light brown and up to 12 cm long. The hairless flowers are bright to deep violet-blue and up to 16 mm long. The species distribution is in the southwest of the Western Cape from the Cape Peninsula to around Swellendam. The habitat is lower fynbos slopes in sandstone. Neither of the two varieties is considered threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Marais, (Ed.), 2017; Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist; https://www.fernkloof.org.za; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
