Pteronia oblanceolata

    Pteronia oblanceolata

Pteronia oblanceolata is a single-stemmed, spreading shrublet that grows to heights from 15 cm to 30 cm. Some low, decumbent branches may sag to the ground, occasionally rooting and forming new plants.

The species distribution is in the southwest of the Northern Cape in Namaqualand and inland in the centre of the Western Cape to the Little Karoo. The photo was taken near Oudtshoorn on the Minwater farm.

The habitat is scrub veld on stony slopes and flats where the soils are loamy and clayey. The species is not considered threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century.

The plants are palatable and heavily browsed (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
