Freylinia visseri

    Freylinia visseri

Freylinia visseri is a hardy, erect shrub growing  to 3 m in height. It has oblong leaves and pink tubular flowers in spring.

The species was named after Mr. Floors Visser whose 1954 planting of four ancestors of todays cultivated plants made a big difference. It allowed for reintroduction of the species into its original natural habitat near Velddrif and Hopefield.

The plants grow in Strandveld loose, sandy soil and fynbos in a restricted part of the west coast. The species is deemed critically endangered in its habitat early in the twenty first century (www.plantzafrica.com; http:redlist.sanbi.org).
