Cysticapnos vesicaria subsp. vesicaria old fruit

Cysticapnos vesicaria subsp. vesicaria old fruit

The inflated, ovoid fruit of Cysticapnos vesicaria subsp. vesicaria is a thin-walled, membranous capsule that hangs air-filled from a longish stalk, its tip pointed. Initially the greenish surface is tinged pink upon the reticulated veins. These veins remain visible on the pale beige, dry fruits scattered on the dead branches like Christmas decorations. Vesica (Latin) means bladder.

Many small, black-coated, shiny seeds are produced in each fruit (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iSpot).
